Big guns avoid cup exit

IT was a giantkilling-free zone in the D & J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup first round.
Jack Abbott Premier Division outfit Rifle Range ‘A’ swept aside Willow Tavern, of Martin Buckley Division Two, 8-1, with Dale Jackman helping himself to a hat-trick.
He was joined on the scoresheet by J Curley, C Franklin, N Eastmond, G Marshall and D Hallom.
Top-flight leaders Coppice United ‘A’ defeated Carrion Crow, who play two divisions below, 5-0 thanks to a S Barrow hat-trick and strikes from K Ahmed and M Ali.
David Giblin Division One top-dogs Legends Bar won 3-0 at Royton Athletic, of Division Two, after goals from J Glasgow, G Morris and P Stevenson.
M Hopwood pounced twice and S Rowbottom scored as Division One Highfield United defeated Springhead Libs ‘B’, who play in Division Three.
Top-flight action saw second-placed Rifle Range Royle Blues earn a 3-2 victory at FC Royton.
Limeside King George kept up the pressure on the leading pack by beating Oddies Athletic 3-1.
Failsworth Athletic won 4-2 at Oldham GPO in David Giblin Division One (see John Gilder’s Match of the Day).
In Division Three, Rifle Range ‘C’ triumphed 4-2 at Famous King George ‘B’ through a Drew Wilson hat-trick and an A Harrison strike.
