FOOTBALL: ANGLERS roared to a shock 5-1 victory at Rifle Range Royle Blues in the D & J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League Challenge Cup first round.
For Andy Livesey’s David Giblin Division One outfit, it represented a giant-killing against their Jack Abbott Premier Division opponents. Lee Hanson notched a clinical double, with man-of-the-match Paul Collins, Lee Dimelow and Paul Naylor doing the rest of the damage.
Andrew Oakes recorded Rifle Range Royle Blues’ consolation goal.
Division Three team Coppice United ‘B’ also progressed with a 5-2 defeat of Junction Inn, who prop up the same division.
K Zamir’s brace for Coppice was complemented by strikes from M Zubair, N Hussein and A Judge.
N Barnes pounced twice for Junction.
Limeside King George maintained second position in the top flight after a resounding 6-0 defeat of Fitton Hill Rangers. W Ware scored twice, with J Bond, D Hendry, W Berry and L Melia adding single goals. Third-placed Rifle Range ‘A’ had Nathan Eastmond and Keiran Holt to thank for a 2-1 win against Oddies. Rifle conceded a late own goal but they held on for the three points.
An entertaining basement battle saw FC Royton triumph 5-4 at Red Star.
Adam Ruddock helped himself to a brace as Puckersley won 4-3 at Failsworth Dynamos in David Giblin Division One. Anthony Duffy and Ste Uren completed the scoring for the visitors.
Ryan Fagan’s hat-trick helped Rifle Range ‘B’ to a 4-2 win against Oldham Tigers in Martin Buckley Division Two. It was quite a goalscoring milestone for the prolific 17-year-old: he mustered his fourth treble in as many games. J Pye got the other goal for Rifle.
N Batley and A Ali got their names on the scoresheet for Tigers but it was not enough to prevent their side slipping to defeat.
In Division Three, Rifle Range ‘C’ lost 3-2 to Crompton Victoria despite strikes from Lee Dudley and Zac Reid giving them hope.
