A SOUL-DESTROYING last-minute goal consigned Oldham's first team to a 2-1 defeat at Clitheroe which pushes the team closer to the relegation zone in North Women’s Division Two.
It was nonetheless a season's best performance, against a side second in the table.
After a goalless first half, Clitheroe took the lead early in the second period before Karen Rowley smashed home the Oldham equaliser a quarter-hour before full-time.
Player of the day Sarah Simpson, in goal, made several fine saves. But a late goal snatched away the prospect of a point for the visitors, who slip a place to ninth.
OLDHAM'S second team can take heart from their efforts produced in the Greater Manchester League Division One tournament, held at the Armitage Centre, Fallowfield.
Currently bottom of the table and drawn in a tough group on the day, one loss and three draws — including a goalless stalemate against eventual winners Stockport Bramhall — was a promising return.
Player of the day was awarded to Lorna McGuinness, who scored an impressive goal against Manchester Uni. The team can now look towards retaining their Division One status.
