ROLLER DERBY:
IN their first home bout at the Thunderdome, the Rainy City Roller Girls proudly took to the track to face London Roller Girls Brawl Saints in arguably their hardest game to date.
What ensued was 60 minutes of no-holds-barred, full-contact roller derby action, seeing Rainy City’s captain and England skater Missy Rascal and her team put on a show of skill and determination.
Rainy City took an early lead, Missy Rascal getting lead jammer status and stealing the first set of points.
London settled quickly, though, and registered points of their own in the first 15 minutes.
Rotating jammers Missy Rascal, Randi Razorlegs and Belle-Istic, Rainy City scored highly and defended well, but incurred penalties, resulting in the visiting team scoring heavily in a number of power jams.
London were 109-51 in front by the end of the first period.
Rainy City drove forward in the second half, demonstrating tremendous agility and nerve to boost their points tally, but they were unable to prevent London from clinching victory by 185-126.
The defeat did nothing to dampen the home team’s spirits, having held their own against one of the toughest opponents in the country. This feat of athleticism was the first of many events planned for the Thunderdome and marks the start of a new era for roller derby in the North-West.
