JASON Stone’s four-goal haul helped secure only Parkside’s second win of the season in Martin Buckley Division Two of the D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League at Coalshaw Green Park.

Parkside’s leading scorer — and on this display it is clear to see why — took each of his goals with aplomb.

Stone’s performance proved once again that there is lots of talent within the league and maybe now is the time to focus on positives like this in the wake of a somewhat turbulent few weeks for the competition.

Fitton Hill’s Gareth Armstead and Royton FC’s Christian Fraser are two that spring to mind.

With such talent at their disposal, now could be a good time for the league to consider reforming the representative team to pit their wits against other leagues across the North-West.

Paul Forbes, secretary of Parkside, said: “Jason’s finishing is second to none, but he is also very good on the ball and makes some great passes.

“Obviously his goals contributed much to the overall outcome of the game, but there were other players who played a key part.”

Parkside ’keeper Rob Foster produced some good saves, while his Tavern counterpart Nathan Foy, who also doubles up as the team’s secretary, had a fine game despite the fact he had to pick the ball out of the net six times.

Forbes added: “We played some excellent football and the lads are buzzing at getting our second win in the league.”

Tavern’s Foy said: "There were chances at either end and both ’keepers had a lot to do.

“The match could have produced more than 10 goals, but both ’keepers made some good saves.”

Referee Richard Burton also played his part in an ensuring there was no play-acting in an entertaining 90 minutes.
