ANGLING:

CHADDERTON-based John Jones ended a lean spell by clinching a brace of open wins.

The Garbolino Elton rod initiated the double with victory in the Brookside Fisheries open.

Drawn on peg five, he used maggot at 11 and 12 metres to catch 40lb 6oz of ide, perch and small carp.

Neil Butterworth, the runner-up, had a 31lb 3oz net. Jones followed up with another win at Brookside.

This time drawn on peg 24, he caught carp, ide, perch and f1s with the pole and red maggot at 12 metres.

Andy Butler, in second place, had a similar net to the winner, which weighed in at 34lb 4oz.

DAVE Holland, of TRI-CAST Highfield, was first in the Todmorden AS Saturday open on the Bellfield length of the Rochdale Canal.

Employing squatt and pinkie at six and seven metres, he landed 8lb 7oz of small roach and skimmers.

John Leeds (TRI-CAST Rochdale) was second-best with caster at the bottom-of-the-track and across for a level 5lb of roach. Organiser Simon Walton had to settle for third place with 4lb 12oz.

Tomorrow’s match is on the lorry park and AKZO lengths of the canal. The draw is at 9am in the lorry park.

PEG 13 proved lucky for Phil Hulme, who claimed victory in the second round of the Chadderton Mill AC Winter League on the club water.

He caught 20lb of ide on maggot in the shallows at 12 metres, before pellet at 10 metres attracted 4lb of carp which lifted his weight to 24lb 2oz. Adie Hicks, a newcomer to match-fishing, was chuffed with his second-placed 21lb 8oz of ide and a 5lb carp on maggot at nine metres.

Jim Evans, in third place, had an all ide catch of 16lb 8oz on chopped worm and caster on the deck at 10 metres.

Graham Mitchell (GTI Gilders), in fourth, was unlucky. After a flying start, a broken pole limited his fishing to eight metres and a 15lb 6oz of ide.

THE final round of the Pennine Pairs series, fished on the Castleton length of the Rochdale Canal, went to Danny Bolland with 5lb 6oz of roach and a 2lb bream on bread punch at 12 metres.

Martin Hellewell, the runner-up, used bread punch over liquidised bread for 4lb 15oz of roach, while Dave Colbran’s caster netted mainly roach in a 4lb 10oz bag for third.

The top pair on the day were Derek Greenwood and Paul Cryer, followed by brothers Dave and George Colbran.

Overall victory in the Pairs League went to Greenwood and Cryer, with Nigel Storr and Hellewell in second place.
