Boss Brown eyes cup run

AVRO edged to a 1-0 victory at Old Alts in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Gilgryst Cup second round.

Left-winger Chris Howells curled home a second-half winner to cap a fine team move from Phil Brown’s side. Defender Ryan Barrow (19), formerly of Bury, made an impressive debut at the heart of the Avro defence. Brown said: “We always love a good cup run at this club and this season is no different. I think we could have done better in this competition last year so it would be nice to put it right this time around. For his first game in new surroundings Ryan looked good at the back.”

Weather permitting tomorrow brings a return to league action, with Avro facing Old Alts again, only this time as hosts. Brown’s boys occupy third position in the Premier Division table, six points ahead of their opponents but five behind leaders Hindsford, albeit with a game in hand.

“It is very tight at the top and I can see the lead changing hands several times,” added Brown. “We are in a position of strength because we have played all the best sides away from home, and have faced Hindsford home and away. The other challengers won’t relish the prospect of coming to our place so it is all to play for.”

Springhead exited the West Riding FA Challenge Cup after a 2-0 defeat at Lepton Highlanders, while top-flight action saw Royton Town hold Wythenshawe Amateurs to a goalless draw.

Holders Town are already through to the next round of the Gilgryst Cup, having beaten Wythenshawe 2-1. In Division One, Hollinwood enjoyed a 4-3 win at the expense of Woodley Sports reserves.
