Away-day first joy for Higgy

RUGBY:
HIGGINSHAW celebrated their first win on the road this season after a thrilling 14-10 defeat of Langworthy Reds.
The local outfit trailed by 10 points at one stage, but recovered to take the spoils in this North-West Counties League Division Two clash.
Higgy thought they had gone over early on, but Adam Newton’s effort was ruled out for not grounding the ball properly.
Langworthy went ahead in the 22nd minute with a converted try, but the visitors hit back with Jordan Hanley being stopped just short of the line.
Higgy fought all the way to get back into the game, with a big defensive show coming from Mathew Corbally, Keith Chadwick and Stuart Barry keeping their line intact.
But they were unable prevent a second Langworthy try against the run of play just after the break.
Higgy refused to throw in the towel and they responded with a first score from 17-year-old Joe Mayall, who spotted a gap in the line.
Jordan Hanley, Lee Burke, and Paul Turner were outstanding, as time and again they put in big
defensive hits. It was Hanley who scored next, running the angle to latch on to a Kiel Lancashire pass to go over wide out.
With Langworthy’s lead now at two points, Higgy pushed for victory. And after Burke went close, a neat pass from David Sweeney put in Newton for the match- winning try, which Lancashire converted.
Sensing the game was slipping away, the hosts pounded the Higgy line, but every man defended a though their life depended on it to hold on for a superb victory.
