All’s well with dazzler Dunkerley

KEN Dunkerley, of Honeywell ‘E’, was the biggest winner in round one of the Oldham Table Tennis League’s Handicap Cup.
Competing in the Division Four section, he amassed an amazing 78 points in his side’s win against their ‘G’ team.
It was a great show from Dunkerley as Honeywell ‘E’ had to concede a start of 152 points. He received excellent support from Pete Ganley (48) and Brian Hall (35) in the 34-point victory.
The Honeywell ‘F’ team, of Alan Wynn (22), Derek Naylor (15) and John Rutland (10), defeated Coldhurst ‘D’ by a 22-point margin.
In Division One, Werneth ‘A’ overturned a 113-points handicap deficit against Rosehill to win by 22.
Darryl Meredith gained 69 points, Stuart Meredith 55 points and Jon DePledge 28 points.
Last season’s beaten finalists Hollinwood ‘B’ progressed at the expense of leaders Glodwick ‘A’.
Hollinwood’s 114-point start was plenty as they won by 53, thanks to decent performances from Paul King (-14), Matty Evans (-18) and Nathan Buckley (-29).
Round one in Division Two saw the 2010-11 finalists go head-to-head, and it was Hyde YMCA B who exacted revenge on Unison ‘A’ by securing a 22-point victory.
Unison’s team of Mike Brierley, Alan Auxilly and Andy Hey all clawed back similar amounts of points, but the star man was Hyde’s Dennis Bradshaw, who gained seven points to add to their 101 start.
Hollinwood ‘D’ defeated leaders Hyde YMCA ‘A’ by 15 points courtesy of an 130-point start.
Steve Hathaway (-33) Joe Redikin (-34) and Paul Hutchinson (-46) held on against Lionel Royle (47) Geoff Ogden (40) and Ken Ward (26).
Division Three Cup holders Grotton ‘B’, armed with a 54-point start against Unison ‘B’, won by 26.
Unison’s Dave Wild (20) and Adrian Borrel (48) played well but it was Grotton’s Steve Smith, who swung the balance with a handicap of 21 points.
Hollinwood ‘E’, conceding an 11-point start against Owls ‘A’, picked up 26 points to win by 15 points.
Trailing by one point with the doubles to go, the Hollinwood pairing of John Foster and Steve Evans held their nerve to defeat Richard Tamworth and Colin Ogden by 16.
Werneth ‘D’ gave their ‘E’ team a 44-point start and went on to win by 44 points.
Colin Pellowe and Richard Hinchliffe both yielded 41 points each, while Paul Whyatt gained nine.
Ian Cockcroft starred for Deaf ‘A’, netting 62 points in their win at Coldhurst ‘B’, who had a 90-points start.
Further gains by Liaqat Ali (45) and Dave Varney (26) saw them through by 57 points.
In Division Five, Coldhurst ‘E’ , with a 55-point start, gained seven against Our Lady’s ‘B’.
Frank Corlett (10) Derek Taylor (3) and John Greenwood (-3) were always in control despite a good performance from Lewis Toal, who picked up 16 points for Our Lady’s.
Gains by Debbie Robinson (61) and Rob Ainsworth (27) was enough to give Pollards ‘A’ a 29-point victory against Deaf C, having conceded a 41 start.
