Hollinwood lifted by Davies show

RUGBY: HOLLINWOOD recorded a great 22-12 win over third-placed Widnes Tigers in Division Three of the North-West Counties League.
Despite being much the better side, the local outfit were guilty of making daft mistakes when in possession while they also conceded too many penalties.
This allowed Tigers to stay on Hollinwood’s coat tails well into the second half.
However, the home side’s larger playing area is in contrast to their opponents’ ground, which played a part in the Tigers’ big forwards eventually running out of steam.
Peter Davies opened the scoring for Hollinwood with a try and conversion.
Terry Whaley then went over, again goaled by Davies, to double the advantage.
Tigers, who had won seven of their previous 12 league games, responded with a converted try.
But Hollinwood regained their composure with a third try, man-of-the-match Davies again touching down for a 16-6 half-time lead.
Tigers refused to throw in the towel and hit back with a six-point haul, only for Andy Gorey to calm the hosts’ nerves with a converted try.
The score knocked the stuffing out of the visitors and their heads dropped.
Stand-out performers for Hollinwood included Mike Richmond, who produced his best performance of the season so far with strong runs and big hits in defence.
Eric Johnson also did a great job in leading the team around the field and was backed up by Kevin Collins and Phil Bell.
Hollinwood could find themselves off the bottom of the table on Saturday tea-time as they visit the team directly above them, Wigan Bulldogs.
HIGGINSHAW were unable to raise a team away to Ulverston in Division Two and conceded an 18-0 defeat.
