TABLE TENNIS:
HONEYWELL ‘A’ wrecked Saddleworth’s 100-per-cent record in Division One of the Oldham Table Tennis League.
Aiming for a 15th league win on the trot, the title hopefuls were beaten 6-4.
Gary Crossley’s treble was in vain for Saddleworth, while Rob Carter was on the mark for Honeywell in a rare appearance in the top flight.
Another surprise result saw relegation-threatened Hollinwood ‘B’ post a convincing 9-1 victory over Werneth ‘B’. Matty Evans and Mohammed Sagied each bagged maximums.
There was also a shock in Division Two as Werneth ‘C’ went down to a narrow 6-4 defeat at the hands of lowly Grotton ‘A’.
The result was a blow to Werneth’s chances of promotion.
Uppermill ‘A’, with an eye on a place in Division One next season, were held to a 5-5 draw by Hollinwood ‘D’, for whom new signing Gabriel Wilding helped himself to a maximum.
Honeywell ‘D’ are still the side to catch in Division Three after a crushing 10-0 victory over Coldhurst ‘C’.
The race is on for runners-up spot, with Deaf Club ‘A’ getting the better of rivals Saddleworth ‘B’ 7-3.
Hollinwood ‘E’ are also in the hunt for second place, and they defeated Oldham Owls ‘A’ 7-3. David Harthan picked up all three points for Owls.
It was derby day in Division Four.
Werneth ‘F’, including a David Jefferson maximum, overcame their ‘G’ team, while Lee Rowbotham (three), Alan Wynn (two) and John Rutland (two) were on the mark for Honeywell ‘F’ in an 8-2 success over their ‘G’ side.
Eight-year-old Amirul Hussain again highlighted his potential with a treble for Hollinwood ‘G’ in a 5-5 draw against Uppermill ‘C’.
Jim Bradbury and Christopher Smith notched doubles in response for ’Mill.
Pollards ‘A’ and St Saviours look almost certain for promotion after they beat Unison ‘A’ (8-2) and Pollards ‘B’ (9-1) respectively.
