AMATEUR FOOTBALL:

Manchester Gregorians 0, Springhead 2
UNBEATEN in eight league matches, Springhead are one of the form teams in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division this term.

Manager Lee McAllister was glad the weather didn’t interrupt their excellent run, with a 2-0 victory at Manchester Gregorians.

Springhead took the lead just after the half-hour mark courtesy of a spectacular goal from Richard Bennett.

A clearance from the Gregorians goalkeeper landed at the feet of Bennett who, some 45 yards out, returned it with interest — a stunning strike.

And the visitors sealed the win six minutes from time, Anthony Corlett lobbing home from 18 yards after good work from Josh Walker.

It was the only local Manchester League game to beat the weather.

McAllister (pictured below) said: “I can't remember big Steve (Szklanki) having a shot to save in our goal.

“It has been a great run but, despite some really good performances, we have tended to draw too many games. But we put that right against Gregorians by dominating the game — although we should have put it to bed sooner.

“This is our strongest squad since we finished as runners-up in the Premier Division three seasons ago, and we could also lift the Gilgryst Cup.”

Springhead have been boosted by the arrival of half-a-dozen players, with Scott Owen, Rick Massey, Jack Barnes, Anthony Cortlett and brothers Mark and David Ashworth have all playing their part.

THE entire D & J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League schedule was wiped out, as were those of the Huddersfield and District League, the Lancashire and Cheshire League and Lancashire Amateur League.
