RUGBY:

WATERHEAD are hoping to play their Challenge Cup first-round tie away to Hunslet Old Boys, the Yorkshire Cup holders, this weekend.

The Peach Road side had no trouble overcoming Hull University, running in 12 tries in a thoroughly dominant 68-10 victory.

Carl Sneyd set the ball rolling in the sixth minute — he added the goal — with Scott Owen and Ashley Wildman also going over before the mid-way point of the first period.

Craig Highton scored Waterhead’s fourth try just before the half-hour mark, before Kieran Grennan crossed the line in the 40th minute.

Waterhead started the second half in the same vein with Terry Fitzgerald going over four minutes after the restart.

Highton touched down for a second time moments later, with Alan Williamson and Fitzgerald continuing the onslaught.

Another try from Owen was followed by some relief for Hull, who got off the mark through Liam Duffy. Josh Rimmer goaled.

However, Waterhead were soon back in the ascendancy thanks to tries from Wildman and Darren Nixon.

Hull did have the last laugh courtesy of a Crawford Matthews score, but not before Michael Diveney and Sneyd had kicked five and four goals respectively over the 80 minutes.
