NOWHERE TO HIDE . . . Oldham’s Marvin Greaves traps John Connolly on the ropes in the four-round contest.
BOXING:
OLDHAM Sports Centre has already become a happy hunting for local boxer Marvin Greaves.
The 30-year-old welterweight, who made his debut in the professional ranks at the venue last autumn, proved too good for John Connolly.
Greaves was handed a unanimous points win after being taken the four-round distance by the Birmingham fighter. Connolly replaced Carl Allen, who switched to another bout on the bill.
Connolly won the opening round, but lost the next three as the local fighter came back in determined fashion.
Greaves will chase a third straight victory on the undercard to Martin Grainger’s first defence of his British Masters International crown, in either late April or early May.
The Heywood cruiserweight’s shot at the vacant title was the headline act on the night.
And Grainger made it eights win from 12 pro contests by stopping rival, Darlington’s Carl Wilson, in the seventh round.
Sam Omidi, also from Oldham, made a successful pro debut, the light-middleweight bagging a points win over Nick Coret.
Liam Taylor and Matthew Ryan completed a Middleton double on the night. Taylor, a light-welterweight, stopped Carl Allen in the first round, while light-middleweight Ryan overcame Billy Smith on points.
