Uppermill’s show of spirit

FOOTBALL: Uppermill recovered from a desperate start and had their ’keeper sent off to hold runaway Division One leaders Hepworth United to a 2-2 draw.
Uppermill fell behind in the third minute in this Huddersfield and District League clash, and worse was to follow when United added a second moments later.
They came close to scoring a third — the ball crashed off the crossbar — before Simon Tait’s side reduced the deficit when Chew placed the ball in the bottom corner from a Cooney pull back.
Uppermill dominated the second half, but suffered a blow with 15 minutes to go when ’keeper Rowbotham saw red.
Rainford went between the sticks, and he pulled off a great save before Uppermill drew level thanks to Jacombs’ calm finish.
Ninth-placed Diggle, with games in hand on the teams around them, recorded their fourth league win of the season courtesy of a narrow 1-0 defeat over basement boys Slaithwaite United.
Heyside, with their sights firmly set on promotion to the top flight, defeated lowly Scissett 2-1.
After a goalless first half in the Division Two clash, the local outfit broke the deadlock with two goals in quick succession from Leon Perry and James Taylor.
Scissett reduced the arrears late on in the game, but second-placed Heyside played out the time remaining to claim the points.
In Division Four, 3D Dynamos were beaten 2-1 at home to Hade Edge — see John Gilder’s Match of the Day — while Moorside succumbed 4-1 to leaders Moldgreen Con.
Heyside’s second string hit the goals trail in Reserve Division Two, putting 10 past Netherton ‘A’ without reply.
On target were Matthew Nokes (three), Jake Warburton (two), Chris Taylor (two), Joe Ryder, Steven Partington and Mark Kingsley.
CLUB bragging rights were at stake when Rifle Range ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams went head to head in round two of the D&J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League’s Challenge Cup competition.
And Range ‘A’, who exited the Manchester County FA Sunday Cup seven days earlier, emerged victorious in a nine-goal thriller. Nathan Eastmond led the way, scoring four times in a 6-3 win.
There was a surprise in the other second-round tie as Fitton Hill Rangers, with goals from Gareth Armstead (two) and Darren Scanlon, beat Jack Abbott Premier Division rivals Chaddy End 3-2.
Oldham Tigers needed penalties to overcome Coppice United in a round-two replay, while Wayne Dean bagged a brace for FC Royton in a 5-3 victory at Crompton Victoria.
The Division Two Shield match went to form as table-toppers Limeside Athletic defeated Carrion Crow 4-2.
Failsworth Athletic are the new leaders in David Giblin Division One after recording a 4-2 win at Springhead Liberal Club ‘A’. Reece Lyndon got two of the goals.
John Stone notched a hat-trick for Parkside against Westwood FC in Martin Buckley Division Two, but his effort was only good enough to earn a point in a 4-4 draw.
