FOOTBALL: 3D DYNAMOS were on course for victory at home to Hade Edge in Division Four of the Huddersfield and District League — but two second-half goals pocketed the points for the visitors at Newbarn playing fields.
Andy Lees gave Dynamos the lead at the midway stage of the first half with a sweetly struck 20-yard drive from the angle of the penalty area.
At that point, it seemed that the hosts would push on for the victory and narrow the gap on the division’s leading pack.
Player-manager Mark Perry said: “I think we deserved to win the game on the evidence of our first-half performance, but we lost our composure and shape after the break and allowed Hade Edge back into it.
“All-in-all, a draw would have been a fairer result.”
Dynamos are enjoying life in this, their first season as an open-age team in the Huddersfield League and occupy a comfortable mid-table position.
But it really was a case of three points lost against high-flying Edge, who claimed the spoils with goals in the 58th and 76th minutes.
Perry, who was the stand-out performer for Dynamos, added: “We had an open-age side about five years ago, but that disbanded.
“We are slowly but surely, as a new open-age team, getting used to the league.
“We have got the players and I think next season could see us challenge for promotion.
“There is a lot of hard work in running a team at this level and I would like to thank Dave Ashton, Oliver Mellin and Johnny Smith for their efforts.”
Six-hit Avro in great shape
AVRO are in fine shape for tonight’s Manchester Challenge Cup final against East Manchester at Sports City (7pm).
In their latest clash, Phil Brown’s charges swept aside Wythenshawe Amateurs 6-0 to keep alive their hopes of snatching the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League Premier Division title.
The win lifted Avro above Walshaw Sports, who were in Gilgryst Cup action.
Although they are 15 points off leaders Hindsford, Avro have five games in hand over the high-flyers.
Avro had Springhead on their side in the pursuit of top honours.
Lee McAllister’s men continued their fine run of form — they are now unbeaten in 10 games — by overcoming second-placed East Manchester 1-0.
The visitors had goalkeeper Steve Szklanka to thank as he denied East Manchester from the penalty spot after a clumsy challenge from Mark Ashworth.
Paul Stevenson hit the crossbar with a rasping drive early in the second half as Springhead looked for a way through.
They broke the deadlock just after the hour mark when Josh Walker placed the ball under the ’keeper’s body from Rick Massey’s pass. And the goal proved enough to hand Springhead the spoils.
The two teams will meet again in the last four of the Gilgryst Cup on Saturday, March 17.
Royton Town completed a hat-trick of wins for local sides in the top flight as they defeated AFC Monton 2-1.
But Hollinwood’s hopes of lifting the Murray Shield were thwarted by Chapel Town, who won 3-0.
