League’s double cash tonic

THE Saddleworth and District Cricket League are celebrating a double boost.

Versasteel, based in Ashton, have agreed to put their name to the league for the next two years.

And the Tanner Cup, first played for in 1925, will get its first sponsor thanks to Mark Antony Kitchens and Bedrooms. This deal is initially for 2012.

Versasteel, who supply roofing and cladding materials, replace Armstrongs Office Furniture.

League secretary Trevor Harrison said: “We’re delighted and fortunate in this day and age to have obtained such an agreement.

“We’re sure the relationship will be of benefit to both parties. At the same time, we must also express our thanks to Armstrongs for their great support over the last five seasons.”

Mr Harrison added that the league sought the permission of their president, Mr Roger Tanner, whose family name is associated with the knock-out competition, before going ahead with the deal.

Harrison added: “We’re also pleased that Mark Antony Kitchens and Bedrooms will sponsor the Tanner Cup.

“This is a new venture for the league and we’re hoping it will be a success.”



THE Reader Lancashire Inter-League Trophy first-round tie between the Saddleworth League and the Lancashire County League will take place at Denton West CC on Sunday, June 10.



UMPIRE John Hughes has put up a trophy to be played for by the champions of the Saddleworth League and Lancashire County League. Mr Hughes, who officiates in both competitions, will hand out the silverware for the first time when Uppermill take on Prestwich at Leefields on April 15 or 16.



THE Saddleworth League dinner has a new venue. The White Hart in Lydgate replaces Uppermill Civic Hall in hosting the event, which sees teams and individuals pick up prizes for their efforts over the season. It will take place on Friday, November 9.
