FOOTBALL: Limeside King George blasted their way to the semi-finals of the D and J Builders (North-West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League President's Trophy following a comprehensive victory over Highfield United at Mabel Road.

Any hopes of a shock result for David Giblin Division One outfit Highfield quickly evaporated when Jack Abbott Premier Division leaders Limeside showed their class by racing into a three-goal lead just before the half hour mark.

Highfield were without regular goalkeeper Joe Crompton because of work commitments — Martin Gurr replaced him between the sticks.

And his side saw their hopes further dashed when Reece Hursthouse was dismissed by referee Zak Eko in the 40th minute for contesting a decision too strongly.

The red card was lambasted by Highfield manager Steve Palmer, who said: "I thought it was harsh on Reece. After the sending off Limeside were too strong for us, but I can't really argue about the outcome."

Limeside player-manager Warren Berry said: "To be honest I thought it was a scrappy start to the game and despite the fact we scored eight goals I thought it was scrappy throughout.

"Our class and ability showed through and we were obviously comfortable winners.

"We won this competition two years ago (as Limeside Athletic) and it would be good to win it again."

Limeside are now clear favourites to land the President's Trophy, as they are for the Premier Division title.

Highfield have an outside chance of gaining promotion from Division One.
