RUGBY:
RESURGENT Fitton Hill Bulldogs climbed off the bottom of North-West Counties League Division Four after a 21-14 home triumph over Rochdale Mayfield.
It was their second successive win, having convincingly seen off Westhoughton Lions 38-4 last time out — which was their first success of the campaign.
Mayfield are no pushovers so it took a determined display to clinch the points.
Bulldogs started strongly, completing two sets of six in the opening minutes before Jay Molloy crossed for the first time this season.
The hosts piled on the pressure and extended their lead when Josh Hulme crashed over following good work from Ben Smith.
A Martyn Swaine drop goal further improved matters, although the visitors managed a try before the interval.
Two quickfire touchdowns from Mayfield saw them go a point ahead of Bulldogs, but Swaine kicked a penalty and Frazer Mottershead went over late on, with Swaine goaling.
In Division Two, Higginshaw were awarded an 18-0 victory as opponents Orrell St James could not raise a team.
Higgy will play in Division Three of the new North-West Men’s Open Summer League, with Chris Tomlin and Ryan O’Donnell as joint coaches.
Training continues tomorrow between 6.30pm and 7.30pm at Higginshaw Community Project.
Call Tomlin on 07854 809501 or O’Donnell on 07837 203633 if you want to go along.
