RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s ‘A’ scored four tries, but their efforts were in vain as they were beaten
44-20 at home to Eccles and Salford Juniors in the ‘War of the Roses’ competition.
Saints were eight points adrift after 19 minutes in the clash, which is a forerunner to the new North-West Men’s Open Summer League season.
They replied through a Kieran Davies touch down, converted by Jonathan Fullalove.
Centre Ben Fitzhugh also went over for Saints, but not before Eccles had gone in thanks to Carl Mort, who went on to bag his second try of the afternoon just before half-time for a 20-10 lead.
A Darren Fletcher score and Fullalove goal reduced the deficit to four points in the 42nd minute, only for Eccles to respond with a converted try of their own from Will Rigby.
Back came Saints through Ryan O’Donnell, but Adam Taher added to his first-half score with two more tries and Rigby went in again to seal victory.
