Big fish focus a mistake in glasses grind

I HAD a weekend to forget despite a draw on the Thornhill AC length of the Thornhill Canal.

Rumours of big chub and bream clouded my judgement and I decided to go all out for big fish.

I cupped in two big pots of liquidised bread at 14 metres to my left and two pots of hemp and casters to the right.

Having done that, I started on bread punch at eight metres, catching small fish for the first hour, before I switched my attention to the big fish which were supposed to inhabit the peg.

It was definitely the wrong decision, as I didn’t have a bite on either of those lines and by the time I changed back to the small-fish line they had gone.

I had first, second and third in my area so I knew I had blown a good peg.

To top off what wasn’t a great day I dropped my glasses in the canal and couldn’t get them back.

On to Sunday and the Huddersfield Broad Canal and surely things couldn’t be as bad — or could they?

I was handed a peg which is again known for throwing up some good weights.

HOURS
Unfortunately, I only had two perch and a small jack pike, which slipped through a hole in my landing net, to show for five hours’ fishing.

Mine was the best weight in the wide, but my day ended the same way as on Saturday when I stood on my other pair of glasses!

At least my travelling partner Simon Walton was in the money, netting 4lb 6oz of perch on worm.

My Trabucco Halifax team-mate Darren Kershaw took second place with 5lb 13oz of perch, also on worm.
