Last-gasp Cadd seals Saints win

RUGBY: SUPER-SUB Michael Cadd was the Oldham St Anne’s hero in the 16-12 defeat of Rochdale Mayfield in National Conference League Division One.
He bagged a try with only 90 seconds left on the clock to clinch Saints’ first win of the season at the fifth attempt.
In a keenly-fought clash, the visitors to Higginshaw Road took the lead in the fourth minute, with prop forward Aidie Gleeson converting his own try.
However, it wasn’t long before Saints opened their account when Jordan White broke clear down the National Conference League left flank to launch an overhead pass to send debutante Jordan Hanley in at the corner. White’s attempt at goal just drifted wide.
Seven minutes after the break, White was involved again. This time he set up a try for half-back partner Nathan Jewitt.
White missed the conversion, but landed a penalty just after the hour mark for a 10-6 lead.
With five minutes remaining, it looked like Saints would be heading for another defeat when Mayfield full-back Rob Kershaw scored at the side of the posts, which Gleeson improved.
But Saints had other ideas, and a last-ditch effort paid off when Cadd took three defenders over the line with him to snatch victory. White added the goal.
IN Division Two of the NCL, Waterhead lost their 100-per-cent record at mid-table Widnes West Bank.
The Peach Road outfit, chasing a fifth victory on the spin, held a narrow two-point lead after 60 minutes thanks to tries from Craig Highton and man-of-the-match Dale Lowe. Carl Sneyd was successful with both conversions attempts.
However, the home side hit back with three scores in the last quarter of the game to claim a 24-12 win.
