Nield’s spring in his step with major win

GOLF:
DAVE Nield won Werneth’s first major of the season — The Spring Eclectic Cup — with a 77-13-64.
Runner-up was Paul Williams (78-13-65) who beat Dave Jones on a card play-off.
In a subsidiary medal Ronnie Beresford (82-13-69) pipped Dave Maloney (76-7-69) who edged Graham Holt on the card.
During the Spring Cup, vice-captain James Buckley had a hole-in-one at the
198-yard par-three sixth.
NICK Coburn defied rain and strong winds to win the Chronicle Cup qualifier at BROOKDALE.
He carded 82-21-61 to finish two shots clear of Andy Hadfield. But he best display in conditions more akin to November than April came from Peter Buckley.
The one handicapper fired a 66 for a net 65 to claim third place on the day.
GRAHAM Robinson emerged victorious in OLDHAM’S Chronicle Cup qualifier with a net 62, on a card play-off from Alex Simmons.
Lee Blainey was third with a net 64.
Sunday’s competition at the Lees New Road course was cancelled because of the weather, and the rain washed out the action at BLACKLEY.
FIONA Heston, with 36 points, won the women’s spring meeting at SADDLEWORTH, from Pam Taylor, who returned 33 points.
BLACKLEY hosted an 18-hole stroke par competition, with victory going to Sue Oldham
(all-square), from Esther McGarry (two down), with Helen Sloan (three down) in third place.
