MEET THE CAPTAINS:

EXPECT Lee Rowbotham, captain of Werneth Golf Club, to feel a little footsore this summer.

The 27-year-old has set himself the challenge of playing 100 holes in a single day — more than five-and-a-half rounds — in aid of his charity, Dr Kershaws.

Rowbotham is planning tee-off at 4.30am and finish at dusk on Sunday, July 15.

One of the leading amateur golfers in the area, he possesses a record second to none at the Garden Suburbs course.

Rowbotham has clinched the last two Club Championships, making it three in total. His first success was at the age of 17, when he became the only junior so far to do so.

He also holds the course record at Werneth, a seven-under-par 61 when he was just 18, while he is also a two-time winner of the Oldham and District Championship.

Playing off a handicap of one — he was down to scratch — thoughts of trying to break into the professional ranks must have surely crossed Rowbotham’s mind?

“Yes, I probably would like to do so, but it’s a big financial commitment,” said Rowbotham, who is a buyer for B&M Stores.

“Saying all that, I don't know if I fancy sitting in a pro shop all day. That’s not really me. I would also miss the local competitions too much.”
