HIGGINSHAW let slip a 12-point lead as they were beaten 28-20 by Ulverston in their first home game of the new North-West Men’s Summer League season.
The young Higgy side, coached by Chris Tomlin and Ryan O’Donnell, gave the more experienced visitors a fright with a great performance on Oldham Edge, only to be undone after conceding two late tries.
Stuart Fraser, Gareth Brindley, Tomlin and Stuart Barry were to the fore, working hard in both open play and on defence.
And they provided the solid base from which Higgy went ahead through Paul Turner’s try in the Division Three clash. Jamie Mayall converted.
The hosts increased their lead when Gareth Brindley dived over, with Mayall adding the extras.
Ulverston hit back with a converted score to make it 12–6.
Higgy responded by cranking up the pressure, taking them into the half at 18-6.
Ulverston stepped up a gear in the second half, and drew level at 18-18.
Higgy tried to hit back, and O’Donnell popped over two drop goals to put his side back in front.
But Ulverston nipped in for another try with five minutes to go - then scored again on the whistle
