RUGBY:
WATERHEAD joint coach Paul Geener has thrown down the gauntlet for his players to challenge at the top of National Conference League Division Two.
His battle cry follows a superb 17-8 victory over third-place Ovenden, leaving Waterhead second, two points behind unbeaten leaders East Leeds.
Carl Sneyd went over and added two goals, Dale Lowe and Craig Highton crossed and man of the match Mick Diveney added a field goal for the hosts.
Geener, who runs the team alongside Jon Perks, said: “We told the lads before the match that it was must-win, and they delivered.”
Waterhead take their good form into Saturday’s trip to Oulton Raiders in the Conference Challenge Cup first round.
Elsewhere in the competition Oldham St Anne’s entertain Heworth and Saddleworth Rangers host Bradford Dudley Hill.
