WHEN Shaw’s overseas amateur Oral Rankine packed his bags for the flight to England, it’s safe to say a pair of long johns were not on the must-take list.
The Jamaican will know better next time. The first three games of the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League season were rained off and when the action did get under way, conditions were more March than May.
In an attempt to keep warm, Rakine borrowed a pair of the male undergarments from veteran club-mate Alan Campbell.
They got their first outing at Greenfield, where the West Indian all-rounder scored an unbeaten 95 and took three wickets. He got 67 and bagged a couple more victims the next day against Austerlands.
Shaw captain Andy Young said: “The weather came as a bit of a shock for Oral. He was freezing. He probably didn’t know what to expect. I think he does now.”
Of tomorrow’s other fixtures, Uppermill are looking to make it three wins on the spin at Greenfield, while Steven Howard’s Saddleworth are chasing a hat-trick of wins at home to Moorside.
