Moorside’s long wait is over

CRICKET:

FOR a terrible moment, when three wickets went down for only four runs, it appeared Moorside’s agony would continue.

Almost a year to the day since their last win in the Versa Saddleworth and District Cricket League, Lloyd Kingston’s side were on the verge of another mind-numbing defeat.

So one could easily forgive the back-slapping, fist-pumping and cries of joy, when a mixture of Chris Entwistle’s savvy and the exuberance of youth in the shape of Miles Barnes made sure victory did not slip from their grasp at Well-i-Hole.

The five-wicket triumph over previously-unbeaten Saddleworth was no fluke either.

After reducing the hosts to 11 for three — professional Peter Skuse was snaffled by overseas amateur Francois Mostert for no score — it needed a gritty 53 from Steve Taylor, 24 from Ben Willis and Danny Hesford’s stubborn 22 to reach a respectable 177.

Let’s hope, for Moorside’s sake, it’s not another 12 months before they celebrate again.
