Greenfield youngster Gill breaks club record

YOUNG Chris Gill wrote a new chapter in the long history of Greenfield after smashing a club record 182 in the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League.

The wicketkeeper-batsman’s terrific effort beat the previous best of 172.

A product of the club’s youth programme, Gill (20) showed no mercy as he smashed the Hollinwood attack for 13 fours and 13 sixes in a 133-ball stay.

The visitors were eventually put out of their misery in the final over, by which stage Greenfield were on their way to a whopping 273 for five.

Reigning champions Uppermill maintained their 100-per-cent record with a five-wicket defeat of Stayley at Millbrook.

The home side were going along nicely on 80 for three, only to slump to 125 all out. James Baron’s left-arm spin bagged four for 22, while Mark Lees caught and bowled key man Kamran Hussain for 15.

Darren Shadford was unbeaten on 64 in reply.

Bamford Fieldhouse also made it three wins on the trot with a devastating bowling performance at home to Shaw. Restricted to 166 for six — Chris Schofield contributed 49 — they subsequently dismissed Andy Young’s side for just 38. Mel Austin took six wickets for 14 runs.

Micklehurst managed just 61 at Droylsden, who earlier, thanks to skipper Mike Schofield’s 86, mustered 202 for five.

Friarmere, with half-centuries from Asif Qayyum (64) and Mohammed Shahid (58 not out), inflicted a third straight defeat on Heyside, and Bradley Heap struck a useful 56 for Glodwick, who thwarted Austerlands by 21 runs at Nursery Fields.
