ATHLETICS:

OLDHAM and Royton Harriers had plenty to smile about at the Greater Manchester Track and Field Championships in Warrington.

The promising athletes picked up three gold medals and a silver to put the club on the honours’ board.

In the under-15 boys section, Christopher Brown produced a superb display to win the 800 metres in two minutes 9.1 seconds.

In the same category, Joshua Lamanna claimed first place in the 1500m in 4:41.2.

And under-17s runner Adam Howard struck gold in the 800m, recording 2:03.7. Team-mate Matthew Shaughnessy, took silver in 2:05.3.

The three gold medalists will represent Greater Manchester in an inter-counties event at Robin Park, Wigan, in June.

A FIELD of 25 Royton Road Runners took on the challenge of a new course in the Chester Half Marathon, the sixth race in this year’s Club Championship series.

It proved tough going for those still recovering from the London and Greater Manchester marathons, while Kirsty White and Colin Green, who helped each other through to the finish just inside one hour 40 minutes, had to cope with injury.

Ian McBride, the reigning club champion, showed no ill-effects from his marvellous London Marathon exploits as he finished in an excellent sixth place in 1:11:46.

McBride was just two minutes behind the eventual winner, Robert Baker of Hallamshire Harriers.

Stuart Carroll demonstrated similar powers of recovery, as his time of 1:19:10 earned him the second V40 prize and 21st overall.
