Licence hitch prompts late move
Date published: 18 May 2012
TONIGHT’S BoxAcademy show had to be moved to Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester after it emerged the original venue, Oldham Sports Centre, has no licence for Friday night boxing.
Steve Wood prospects Tommy Flanigan, Tommy Coyle, Shayne Singleton, Sam Omidi, Alex Rutter and Hollinwood fighter Marvyn Greaves are all on the bill.
Greaves was denied the chance of a home-town fight when Wood carried out last-minute checks on the paperwork.
A VIP Promotions spokesperson said: “Since professional boxing returned to the town it has always been on a Saturday. It would have taken 28 days to sort out a licence for Oldham.”
Oldham Sports Centre staff are now looking into acquiring a Friday night licence.
