BOWLS:

THE 2012 Oldham Evening Chronicle Bowling Handicap gets underway tonight with action at four venues.

Brian Raynor starts the defence of his title at Moorside, while other previous winners in action are Mark Dwayre, Peter Craig, Colin Brooks and Neil Armstrong. Play starts at 6.45pm, with practice from 6.30.

The draw at each venue will be made during the practice period.

GREATER Manchester take on the Potteries on Sunday (2pm) in their second group match in the Endsleigh County Championship.

Having already beaten Wales in the opening game, the Manchester men know that another victory will take them to the brink of securing a semi-final place.

They have chosen the George and Dragon, Hyde, for the home leg, while the away team will go to Florence Tennis and Bowling Club, Stoke-On-Trent.

GREATER Manchester women beat South Derbyshire by 21 chalks to make it three wins out of three in this year’s County Championship.

They lost at Spondon Bowls Club by 52 chalks, but won by a hefty 73 at Springbank.

DEFENDING champion Darren Griffiths has reached the finals of the J W Lees Classic at Hopwood Unionist Club thanks to a 21-14 second-round verdict against Graham Law.

Also through is his Nimble Nook team-mate Gareth McMahon, Rochdale’s Steven Leach and Sheffield’s Matt Beever.

Heats continue tonight when Springbank’s Alan Hodson and Alan Bidwell are on the bill.
