Oldham step up challenge
Date published: 08 June 2012
GOLF: OLDHAM ‘A’ are emerging as serious contenders in the Oldham and District Golf League.
They moved to second place in the West division with their third successive victory.
That 6-2 win saw them end North Manchester’s 100 per cent record and narrow the gap at the top to just three points.
The only unbeaten team left in the ‘A’ League is Werneth, who will have been more than happy with a 4-4 draw at Fairfield.
And 6-2 home wins for Brookdale and Crompton and Royton, over Saddleworth and Ashton respectively, saw them improve their play-off hopes.
An 8-0 whitewash of Fairfield means Werneth ‘B’ have taken over at the top of the ‘B’ League East Division from Saddleworth, who were held to a home draw by Brookdale.
And in the same division, Crompton and Royton ‘B’ were delighted with a 5-3 win at Ashton.
West Division outfit Blackley are the only club in all sections with a 100 per cent record after a 6-2 home victory over Dukinfield.
GRAHAM Wildbore tasted major success when he won the Committee Cup at Saddleworth.
Rounds of net 67 and 66 gave him a winning total of 133 and four-shot margin of victory over H Long (68 and 69 for 137).
S J Barton (70 and 70 for 14) was third, while first-round honours went to E Mills for his 64, and the second-round prize to N Cooper after a 65.
