GOLF: WERNETH ‘A’ reached the midpoint of the season with a nine-point lead at the top of the East Division and their unbeaten record intact... just.
They were held to a 4-4 draw by Ashton and while Werneth have shot clear, the race is well and truly on for the second play-off spot.
Brookdale were surprisingly beaten 6-2 at home by Fairfield, who moved into second place. However, only three points separates second from sixth.
Wins for North Manchester and Dukinfield saw those two open up a five-point gap to the rest in the West Division.
In the ‘B’ League, Crompton and Royton have taken over at the top of the East Division after they won 7-1 at home to Saddleworth, while high-flying Werneth went down by the same score at Ashton.
It’s tight here, too, with four points separating the leading five clubs with only winless Brookdale struggling to keep up with the pace.
And there was also a change at the top in the West Division as Stamford leap-frogged North Manchester courtesy of a 6-2 home win. Blackley moved joint top despite losing their unbeaten record, 5-3 at Denton.
FORMER junior captain Liam Dwayre won his first major at Werneth by lifting the Vice-Captain’s prize after a six-hole play-off.
The 21 year old beat ex-captain Dave Griffiths by two shots over the extra holes. They had both tied on level par 136 after two rounds, played in dismal, wet conditions.

THERE was an Oldham one-two in the Manchester and District Past Captains Foursomes competetion held at Warrington Golf Club.
