Legend Steve stands in Wild’s way

Snooker:
MOORSIDE snooker star Michael Wild was today playing the biggest match of his life.

The 31-year-old cueman, an impressive winner of two qualifying matches in the Australian Goldfields Open, was up against living legend Steve Davis in the third round.
Victory in today’s match and a repeat against Ireland’s Ken Doherty tomorrow would earn Wild a place in the Australian Open finals at Victoria’s Bendigo Stadium in July. But first came today’s showdown with six-times world champion Davis.

Victory — and a second win against Doherty, tomorrow — will book him a ticket on the plane to Australia next month and the chance to earn a share of the £279,000 prizemoney.

Wild has had a marvellous week so far at Sheffield’s World Snooker Academy.

He disposed of Neath’s Daniel Wells, once ranked as high as 70 in the world, 5-0; before sending Bradford’s Simon Bedford — current world number 83 — out by 5-2.
