Tanner Cup ties back on tonight

Date published: 18 June 2012

CRICKET: THREE Tanner Cup matches get under way tonight and the other resumes after rain put paid to the quarter-final ties on Saturday.

No play was possible at Stayley, Austerlands and Moorside, while only nine overs were possible at Hollinwood, where visitors Glodwick reached 38 for two before the weather finally won the day.

Mark Whitehead and Rehan Rafiq were dismissed. The latter was run-out in circumstances similar to the incident involving Ian Bell against India last year.

Unlike the England batsman, Rafiq was not called back by the opposing captain.

The Glodwick professional thought he had hit a boundary, but the ball had not gone over the rope and while he was out of his crease, Hollinwood removed the bails.

Matches start at 6.30pm and continue throughout the week until a result is achieved.

BOTH Twenty20 Cup first-round games were called off on Friday – rain was again the culprit – and because the Tanner Cup has run over into this week, the other three ties have also been postponed.

Clubs have until June 28 to play the matches.

CHRIS Schofield made an unbeaten 77 and professional Grant Hodnett struck 76 as Bamford Fieldhouse moved into the last-16 of the ECB National Knock-out competition.

Hosts Farnworth, of the Bolton League, were bowled out for 167 in the group final. Martin Smith claimed four for 26.
