RUGBY:
DAVID and Jason Best are set to return for Oldham St Anne's at the club's time of need.
The prop forward twins (33), who have both represented Oldham RL among other pro clubs, took in a training session this week and are primed for action alongside former pro, 37-year-old Mick Martindale.
Coach Chris Deakin believes the extra experience — plus that of Rick Badby, the stand-off who returned to the ranks to guide the team around the park against York Acorn on Saturday — should help his team’s bid to end the National Conference League Division One season on a high.
St Anne's very nearly had a lot to celebrate against Acorn at Higginshaw Road.
At one stage 18 points down, Deakin's charges powered in three tries and two conversions in the final five minutes to fall agonisingly short of pulling off a shock win. The fianl score was 34-32.
"We were so close,” said Deakin. "Given another three or four minutes, I think we would have had them.
St Anne's face a bottom-of-the-table battle at Castleford Panthers this weekend.
