CRICKET: RAIN, rain, go away come again some other day. Let’s say the middle of September...

The weather continued to spoil the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League programme as heavy showers wrecked any chance of reaching positive results on Saturday.

The Division One matches at Friarmere, Saddleworth, Stayley and Uppermill saw no play; only a handful of overs were possible at Droylsden and Micklehurst, while the heavens opened with Greenfield in a spot of bother at Heyside.

Two games were played to a close in the second XI competition, with bottom club Micklehurst beating hosts and title challengers Shaw by 10 runs and Moorside overcoming Stayley by five wickets.

Heyside had wrestled the initiative away from Greenfield when rain started to pour.

The game was already reduced to 32 overs per side because of a late start... due to rain.

Taking first knock, Heyside’s innings fell away to 135 all out. This was after they were 86 for three.

A break for rain when Heyside were batting meant Greenfield’s target was revised to 123 from 28 overs.

play continued until rain started falling heavily.

As puddles began appearing on the square, there was relief for Greenfield, frustration for Heyside.
