RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s moved off the foot of Division One with a 20-6 victory at Castleford Panthers.
The result, gained in no small part thanks to the galvanising effect of the return of experienced front row men Mick Martindale and David Best, leapfrogged Saints over their rivals.
For the first half-hour, defences were on top in this clash with St Anne’s creating plenty of scoring chances.
The Castleford side drew first blood when Jamie Chappell slid through a gap to touch down, Johnny Carter converting.
Saints continued to apply pressure and, just before the break, Jordan Hanley gathered deep in his own territory before racing downfield to net a superb solo try. Jordan Galloway levelled with the boot, making it 6-6 at the interval.
The visitors assumed total control after that. The impressive Dominic Igoe scored off a fine Martindale pass, man-of-the-match Galloway converting, before Lee Forsythe touched down off Rick Badby’s cross-field grubber. Forsythe added another to round off an impressive win.
