Werneth stretch lead as close rivals crash

WERNETH thought they had slipped up when held to a 4-4 home draw by Saddleworth in the ‘A’ League East Division.

But it turned out they had increased their lead at the top to seven points — after nearest rivals Fairfield and Brookdale both crashed to 7-1 away defeats.

Those losses, to Ashton and Crompton and Royton respectively, make it a real scramble for the two play-off berths. Only five points separate second and sixth with three matches to play.

North Manchester hold a five-point lead in the West Division, and Dukinfield in second spot will have been more than happy with a 4-4 return at Denton.

It is equally tight in the ‘B’ League East Division, where it’s only eight points from top to bottom as the teams look to chase down three-clear Crompton and Royton, who were pegged back by a 6-2 reverse at Brookdale.

And in the West Division, Blackley’s 5-3 home win over nearest rivals North Manchester improved their lead at the top, while Oldham dented Stamford’s play-off hopes 7-1, the Lees New Road club’s first win of the season.

CROMPTON and Royton knocked out ‘A’ Cup holders Werneth when they returned to Denton to complete their second-round tie.

Andy Frizzell and Mike Gazey clinched victory at the fourth extra hole — their second of the night — after being forced off through bad light the week before with the score at 2-2.
