Tribute to one of Waterhead’s best

RUGBY: CLIFF Lamb, a winger of such skill he is described as "one of the best players ever to wear the Waterhead jersey", has died aged 62.

A try-scoring winger who could also play centre and full-back, Lancashire County cap Lamb is remembered fondly for his exploits by former club chairman Kevin Hobson.

"He was very quick and a key member of what was a very good side," said Hobson. "He was outstanding — and a bit of a comic as well. He was always up for a joke."

Cliff, who worked at Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre, was a member of the Waterhead team which played in the tough old days of the Pennine League in the 1980s.

He moved on to sign for Blackpool on amateur forms, helping the seaside club reach the final of the John Player Trophy, before returning to his amateur roots.

The funeral takes place on Friday, July 6, with a service and committal at Oldham Crematorium at 2.30pm. Those attending are asked not to wear black.
