Just the job for Moorside

Lloyd Kingston cut a contented figure after Moorside’s seven-wicket trouncing of leaders Uppermill in the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League.

Friday’s torrential rain had prompted affable Kingston to visit Turf Pit Lane, where he thought the chance of play would be nil — so decided to work instead.

But with another wicket cut and the boundary rope brought in two or three yards, play got underway on time.

Kingston arrived at the ground midway through Moorside’s reply and enjoyed what he saw.

Uppermill weren’t allowed an inch. After a tedious start the reigning champions lost wickets at regular intervals before eventually succumbing to 121 all out.

Moorside had their hiccups in the field, but they also held three excellent catches.

Young medium-pacer Jamie Taylor ripped out the middle order to finish with four for 19 — his best return for the first team.

The dismissal of Baines with the score on nine — he was trapped leg before by Dave Oldfield — gave Uppermill hope.

But the home side didn’t buckle. Never one for getting bogged down, new batsman Sutherland got on with it and, alongside Grobler, seized every scoring opportunity.

When Sutherland was dismissed for 30 to a smart catch by Griffiths off Thompson, Moorside still had a bit of work to do at 74 for three.

Uppermill sniffed a chance, only for the home side to blow them away.

OF the other three games to go ahead, second-placed Greenfield missed the chance to go top after they lost by 39 runs at home to Stayley.

Professional Kamran Hussain struck 121, which featured half-a-dozen sixes and 12 fours, and overseas amateur Usman Malvi made 51.

Captain Steve Bird added an unbeaten 40 to the score of 234 for seven in a match reduced to 40 overs per side.

Chris Gill carried his bat for a superb 117 in reply — he registered seven sixes and nine fours — but the opener’s effort was in vain as Greenfield closed on 194 for four. Malvi and Hussain — the latter should claim for double time — shared the 40 overs.

Professional Gerrie Snyman blasted 123 and John Selby 54 for Heyside (309 for nine) in a 98-run defeat of Austerlands at Nursery Fields. Skipper Adam Young made 63 not out for the hosts.

Hollinwood reached their victory target against Friarmere with six wickets intact. Earlier Mudassar Butt, with five for 45, restricted the visitors to 156 all out.

ALL of Friday’s Twenty20 Cup second-round ties were postponed because of rain. Dates are still to be rearranged.

HOLLINWOOD and holders Bamford Fieldhouse go head to head in the Moore Cup final on Sunday, August 12 — a repeat of last year’s showdown.

Heyside crashed to 87 all out against Bamford, who coasted home by eight wickets.

The venue for the final will be decided by the toss of a coin.
