RUGBY: RECORDS crashed as Waterhead battered Normanton Knights 130-7 in Division Two of the National Conference League.
Even joint-coach Paul Geener got in on the act, crossing for the last of his side’s 24 tries in an astonishing clash.
“I am not sure how I managed it, seeing as the boys were doing their best to keep the ball away from me,” said Geener, who described the ruthless performance as the finest under his command.
Waterhead now hold the league’s record points tally and winning margin. Their Wakefield opponents were suffering from the effects of a player’s wedding and arrived at Peach Road with only 11 men.
Waterhead, keen to boost their points difference to aid a promotion bid, racked up an incredible 82 unanswered points by half-time. The second half had reached only the 25th minute when the game was called off. By that stage Normanton were down to 10 fit players.
The Knights got one of the biggest cheers of the afternoon, when Jacob Crossland popped over a one-point field goal.
At one stage the scoreline was 100-1.
“We played well, though at times it was a little embarrassing to be honest,” added Geener. “We were aiming to boost our points difference - and we managed to do that”
Waterhead climbed to third in the table, with the best points difference in the division.
