ROYTON CC have enlisted the help of star players from Lancashire County Cricket Club and two local leagues in a bid to raise money for the family of Shaw gas-blast victim Jamie Heaton.
The limited-overs cricket match, to be held at the Paddock on Sunday week, July 22, will feature professionals, overseas amateurs and well-known players from the CLL and Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
Darren Wrigley, social chairman of Royton CC, is mobilising club members and cricketers to put on the special match. The area’s two Lancashire stars, Luke Procter and Kyle Hogg, have thrown their support behind the event — though Luke is injured and unlikely to play.
The match starts at 11am and will be 30 or 40 overs per side.
It will be followed by Royfest — a live, open-air concert featuring local bands 10ft Fez, 5ft Fez, The Microdots, Brightside, Twisted Heels, Porter Force, Gary Riley and Jackie Dijon.
Werneth will play their Lees Bitter Twenty20 Competition quarter-final against Milnrow at the Coppice tonight (6.15pm), weather permitting.
The game has been brought forward 24 hours so as not to clash with late club president Trevor Bland’s funeral tomorrow.
The other three quarter-finals, including Oldham’s trip to Littleborough, will be held tomorrow.
