CRICKET - TANNER CUP:
ON Saturday Heyside were shot out for just 80 in a nine-wicket defeat by Bamford Fieldhouse in the Versasteel Saddleworth and District Cricket League.
Yesterday, with a place in the Tanner Cup final at stake, Nick Campbell’s troops beat Bamford by 28 runs. What a difference a day makes.
The last-four clash at Little Hey Street was as exciting as the other tie was one-sided — Glodwick trouncing Friarmere by eight wickets.
Before yesterday, Heyside were the last team to defeat Bamford in the Tanner Cup. That was in the 2008 final when Campbell went home with the man-of-the-match award.
The former Shaw all-rounder, with four for 39, played a big part in his side’s victory this time.
Campbell struggled early on, but once he knocked over ex-Heyside professional Mel Austin for 36, everything clicked into place.
Heyside made a better job of it with the bat than 24 hours earlier, though 202 all out in 41.2 overs didn’t seem enough.
Heyside’s reward is a final against Glodwick on Sunday, August 5.
Nigel Stock’s team were too good for Friarmere, who crumbled to 110 all out.
The tie was switched to Moorside CC because Glodwick’s outfield was unfit.
