RUGBY:
OLDHAM St Anne’s succumbed 40-10 to Thatto Heath Crusaders in the National Conference Challenge Cup.
The hosts, mid-table in the NCL Premier Division, were favourites to progress in the secon round tie, but they had to work hard for their victory. Division One outfit Saints displayed plenty of spirit to restrict Thatto Heath to a 16-10 lead at half-time.
The score remained the same until close to the hour mark when Keiron Maddocks dived in.
Shaun Quinn increased Heath’s advantage moments later, before landing the fourth of six goals.
Andy Lee and Josh Lynch then went over to seal victory for the home side.
Youngsters Martin Swaine, Nathan Jewitt and Jordan Hanley all performed well for Saints in a gritty team display.
SADDLEWORTH Rangers and Waterhead had no games.
