Opening 66 paves way for glory at High Barn
CIARAN Doherty upstaged his elder brother and Bury club-mate Sean to win the Royton Sword by eight shots.

The Lancashire County player opened with a sizzling 66 at Crompton and Royton’s High Barn course to lead by four shots going into the afternoon round in which he carded 71.

Sean, who recently regained his amateur status after a spell in the professional ranks, had to settle for third place after losing second spot on countback against Frodsham’s Alex Pritchard.

Sean also trails Ciaran by 10 points in the Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit, but there is no change at the top with Longridge’s Mark Young, pursuing his fourth title, setting the pace.

FORMER Brookdale assistant professional Grant Hamerton was fourth in the Phoenix Gas Classic at Crewe resort Wychwood Park.

The Pike Fold professional shot 72 and 60 to finish on 141 – six shots behind Disley’s Scott Jackson (65 and 70).

MARK Stoneham and Rodger Kenny teamed up to win Oldham’s four-ball, better-ball medal with net 58.

They won a card play-off to deny runners-up John Waterhouse and Owen Williams.

Steve Taylor and Ian McGloughlin were third with net 60.
