Twenty20 glory is the lure for Werneth

HASNAIN ABBAS (above) and Kyle Roberts (inset) will be key players in Werneth’s bid for Twenty20 glory on Sunday.
CRICKET: IT IS 22 years since Werneth won a trophy in the Lake Garage CLL.
The skipper of the current Coppice outfit wasn’t even born on that glorious day.
But led by Matthew Taylor, the youngest captain in the CLL, Werneth have the chance to put matters right on Sunday.
Taylor is in his first season as Werneth skipper and he would readily admit things have not gone quite as he hoped.
Out of the Wood Cup in the first round and at the wrong end of the league table, Werneth have significantly under-achieved.
But should Taylor’s men win the Lees Bitter Twenty20 Competition, which reaches its climax at Littleborough on Sunday, it would give the club a huge lift for the rest of the campaign.
And Werneth, despite their league placing, do have every chance of success
In overseas amateur Kyle Roberts and professional Hasnain Abbas they have two batsmen ideally suited to this format. Add Matt and Joe Taylor and John Slater and you have a batting line-up capable of big runs.
A varied bowling attack which restricted Milnrow in the quarter-finals is also at the skipper’s disposal
Werneth’s match starts at 1.30pm and, should they prevail, they will play in the final at 4.30pm.
The other semi-final, featuring Heywood and hosts Littleborough, begins at 10.30am.
