Tonge put rivals to the sword

BOWLS:
TONGE gave their Manchester Premier League title claims a major boost with a whitewash of Warrington side Pierpoint and Bryant.
In a top v bottom clash, Tonge won 13-0 (210-115) with successes for Jimmy Derby, Andrew Cairns, Matt Gillies and Darren Griffiths (all 21-5), Nicky Brooks (21-10), Mark Dwayre (21-17), Colin Lane (21-12), Thomas Dobson (21-19), Graham Hickey (21-20) and Steve Squire (21-17).
Tonge face a tough trip to second-placed St Joseph’s (Chorley) next Wednesday.
They lead their main rivals by 21 points, but St Joseph’s have a game in hand.
Tonge’s Gary Ellis, Jimmy Derby and Nicky Brooks, Nimble Nook’s Andrew Buckley and Springbank’s Jimmy Hynes are in the Elton Liberal Club Classic Finals in Bury on Sunday (1pm).
SPRINGBANK’S Steve Copeland and Ged Smedley, and Springhead’s Bob Carr are on the bill in the latest heats of Moorside Classic tonight (6.30pm).
TONGE’S Colin Lane and Thomas Dobson have qualified for the finals of the Thwaites men’s pairs at Norden BC. They defeated N Slater and D Moulton (Rochdale) 21-14 in the third round.
Heats continue on Sunday (6.30pm), while the AC Ventilation women’s pairs will be held at the same time.
