CROMPTON and Oldham are rooted in the basement zone, so Sunday’s derby showdown at Glebe Street could be a pivotal moment in their season.
The hosts are third from bottom, one place above fellow strugglers Oldham and, as both were making noises of high finishes at the start of the season, it is fair to say neither team has fulfilled its potential.
In Crompton’s case, an acute lack of runs in recent weeks – and for most of the campaign – has been their downfall.
Oldham too have not been making the scores they would want.
Skipper Zafar Jatoi, who opens the innings, admits his own form has been ordinary, and as the leader of the side it is up to him and professional Hassan Sheheryar to set an example to the rest.
WERNETH seem to take one step forward and two back, so this is a key weekend for them if they are to keep alive their hopes of a top-eight finish.
They will need to be at their best if they are to defeat reigning champions Norden at the Coppice tomorrow.
ROYTON are the one resurgent side among our four local clubs. They will hope to build on recent improvements on a trip to Middleton tomorrow and a home game against Clifton on Sunday.
